Objectives
As per UNESCO-UNEP, 1976, the goal of an environmental program is to cultivate an audience that is conscious of and interested in the complete environment and the problems associated with it. The environmentally vigilant audience must also develop the attitude, knowledge, motivation and skills to work collectively and individually towards finding solutions to existing problems and avoid new ones.
Any environmental program must establish targets and objectives, to obtain a certain degree of environmental performance for its substantial environmental aspects. These targets and objectives must be persistent and stable with the environmental policies of the organization. Also, they must comply with the legal statute and any other requirements which conform to it. Most importantly, while framing the objectives one should keep in mind they are easily measurable and technologically feasible, after carefully considering the different options available. Three most important factors which must be kept in mind while setting your objectives are the cost, organization’s operational requirements and the overall impact of the objective on the environment and the establishment.
Most environmental programs follow some common objectives which include:
- The areas which are covered by the organization should be well protected and preserved. Constant improvements must be made in managing these protected areas.
- Promoting and supporting products and services which are environmentally strong and sound.
- Harmonizing and integrating environmental plans and policies.
- Endorsing and enforcing the use of less polluting products and technologies in the private and municipal sectors.
The key to pertinent environmental programs is discovering the common points among the organization’s mission and the current learning objectives. By doing this, the needs of the provider as well as the audience are met.
